It’s a beautiful morning in Balmoral, MB, as we kick off day one of the 2025 National Retriever Championship. The sky is partly overcast, with light to no wind. The temperature is currently 18 degrees Celsius, with a forecasted high of 25 degrees and winds gusting to 13 km/h from the ESE this afternoon.
At 7:50 AM, Peter Dozois, the Field Trial Chairman, invited everyone to gather for the “Passing of the Paddle,” a cherished tradition of the NRCC. Mike Zelman, a member of the 2024 judging team, passed the paddle to Marg Murray, the Western zone judge, on behalf of the 2025 judging team.
The honorary test dog, NFTCH FTCH AFTCH OCG’s Equalizer “Mace,” who was beloved by Larry and Elsie Baker and passed away earlier this year, was remembered. The gallery was invited to embrace Mace’s spirit as it ran with the male test dog, “Rip.”
Tests 1 & 2 are combined as a land triple with two retired guns, and a blind. The test is shot: #1 middle r-l, square with a drake mallard, #2 left l-r, angle back with a hen mallard, and #3 l-r, square with a rooster pheasant. Guns #1 and #3 retire. Distances are #1, 180 yds, #2 125 yds, #3 90 yds. Once the dogs have picked up the three marks, they immediately run the blind which is tight to the left side of gun #3 and deeper at 230 yds. The blind is hot when the dogs are running the marks.
The cover is in the field is short, and round bushes concealing guns #1 and #3. The blind planter is to the left and deep of the blind. There is a small mound on line to the blind. Male test dog, Razor’s Whiskey Water’s Rip, handled by Dave Thompson came to line at 8:01am, and female test dog Wink’s Ride’n The Rapids “Ryder” and Teri-Lee Backor came to line at 8:08, so the combined test is taking 7:00 minutes. The first running dog (#24) came to line approximately 8:30 am.
We are being well fed again today by Prairie Fusion Catering. Thank you to the NRCC Canada for being today’s breakfast sponsor, and thank you to Glen & Maureen Kletke, the series 1 sponsor In Memory Of “Remington”.
We are in rural Manitoba with no cell service, and using generators and Star Link, so it is a challenge to get information in a timely manner…please be patient with us! We will have the test dog video edited and posted later today.
Thank you to the Official Sponsors of the National Retriever Championship.
