On day 5 we are at the grounds of Canine Field Co and their new boarding facility “The Lodge”. It is another beautiful day on the north side of North Bay where the temperature is 14 degrees @ 7:30 with a forecast of 26 degrees this afternoon. Winds are calm and negligible all day.
Series 7 is a water triple with two retired guns. Guns are shot around the horn right to left. Gun #1 is a hen mallard at 60 yards thrown parallel with the shoreline into the water from L-R. Gun #2 is thrown R-L at 104 yards into cover at the narrow part at the start of a long point. Gun #3 is a hen mallard at 87 yards and a land bird thrown downhill towards the shore and lands in front of a group of small poplar trees. The test is oriented E/NE so the sun is a factor for the early dogs. Guns #1 & #2 retire when #3 gun is fired. The test is taking 5:30 minutes.
Test dog Cici ran first today – she did a quick job on the go-bird, then was sent for the right retired. She exited to the right of the bird, a quick hunt on the bank and recovered her bird from the water. She took a line to the middle bird that was towards the brushed in gun station, so exited short, but worked her way to the left and came up with the bird.
Male test dog Jameson ran second – he over-shot the go-bird a couple of yards and ended up at the edge of the water, he quickly doubled back to get the bird. He took a good line to the right retired gun but swam right by it (behind the small point), hunted the bank, then back in the water to search the small alcove to come up with the bird. He took more water to the middle retired and came up under the arc. He made a few passes in the area to get the bird. The test takes about 5:30 minutes.
UPDATE 12:30 Series 7 is completed. Unfortunately there were two breaks and a couple of handles. 30 dogs back to the 8th series.

Series 8 – water blind 195 yards
The water blind is run on the left shore of the same pond as the 7th series water triple. The mat is oriented N with the line passing to the right of the go-bird from the previous series. Judges have instructed they want to see “all four paws” on the first gravel point, the line carries over the middle of the next point and to the end of the pond. Two blind planters are sitting on the road above the left-hand shore. The breeze has picked up angling in from R-L.
Test dog Jameson – had a whistle on the angled entry, entered the water then headed a little fat of the point, a whistle to straighten him out, then another whistle before the point put him on the shore and he bound up onto the point. He took a good cast off the point and carried over the 2nd point and entered the water. He appeared left of the line and needed 3 more whistles to keep him moving towards the bird.
Test dog Cici, had a good initial line angled down the bank, then was fat and skimmed the first point which judges indicated was “not enough”, once to the 2nd point she came off hard left, then wouldn’t handle to the right and dug over to the left-hand shore and was picked up. The test takes 2:30 minutes.
There have been a few pickups and some excellent jobs. We will be finished early today to enjoy a pizza party at The Lodge sponsored by owners Kevin & Leanne Riddell of Canine Field Co!
