Welcome to Day Five of the National Retriever Championship. Today’s tests were at Baypoint Kennels near Port Rowan, ON

A few clouds in the sky this morning with a temperature of 13 degrees that warmed up to the low 20s, feels more like 27 degrees.  The wind is from the southwest 10 to 20 km/hr.

TEST #7 WATER BLIND WITH A DRY POP

The test site for Test #7 is an oval pond with native grass, patches of goldenrod, shrubs and trees along the shore.  The pond is covered with duck weed.

Test # 7 is a 170 yd water blind with a dry pop.  The mat is facing north.  Two gunners are in a canoe on the east shore of the pond.  They are not visible from the line.. The wind is blowing 10 km/hr from the southwest.  Handlers signal for the dry pop then are given their number by the judges.  The entry into the pond is down a slope.  The handlers are allowed to move up after they send their dogs.

Today’s test dogs are Astrid handled by Peter Mottola and Piper handled by Grant Koeing.

Starting Dog #5 came to the line at 8:00 am.  The test concluded at 11:00 am

TEST #8 TRIPLE WATER MARKS WITH TWO RETIRED GUNS AND AN HONOUR

Test #8 was triple water marks with two retired guns and an honour.  The mat is facing north and the wind is coming from the southwest at 17 km/hr.

The middle bird is thrown first.  It is a drake mallard thrown to the right (180 yds), The next bird thrown is the right hand bird (135 yds), a hen drake thrown into the test to the left.  The third bird, the go bird, is thrown to the right into heavy cover near the shore (55 yds).
